KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca is cheerful for having paid a special visit to Albertina Luthuli at her home, just after casting her vote earlier today, 28 May 2024.

Alberti Luthuli is the eldest daughter of Chief Luthuli who was first African to be accorded the Nobel Prize for Peace at the hight of apartheid in South Africa. Luthuli received this accolade while serving as the President General of the African National Congress (ANC).

The cheerful Nhaca recounted her conversation with Albertina saying that it brough about feelings of nostalgia as she reflected back to the days when Albertina would narrate how Luthuli valued his people.

“It is indeed a nostalgic experience to have met once again with mama Luthuli. I recalled many moments with her in Groutville where she would share remarkable stories of her father. Importantly, mama Luthuli emphasised that we have a responsibility to sustain the legacy of Chief Luthuli as the current generation of leaders of the ANC.

I am deeply grateful to have shared these moments with Mme. Luthuli and I am happy that she is in good health. She told me that she has already casted her vote and said that her vote was part of efforts honouring the legacy of her father in the interest of a better life and a better world for all.

She also emphasised that we need to ensure that we use this election to fulfil Luthuli’s dream of building a non-sexist, united and democratic South Africa that will offer equal opportunities for all. She continued to point out that her father would indeed be proud of us as a nation should we uphold his spirit - using the ANC as the vehicle for social transformation”, said Nhaca.

Chief Luthuli visited Olso in 1961 to receive his Nobel Prize of 1960. He was elected President General of the ANC along former President Mandela as his deputy in 1952.

Albertina Luthuli is a retired medical Doctor and a veteran politician who served in the Provincial Legislature and National Assembly amongst other strategic positions representing the African National Congress.

She is one of the firm public voices that have been calling for the re-opening of the inquest into Chief Luthuli’s mysterious death. Mayor Nhaca said she is happy that another inquest is being officiated.
