Media statement - KwaDukuza mayor welcomes multiparty oversight visit to infrastructure projects
KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca this morning, 19 September 2024, addressed a multiparty oversight delegation composed of members of the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Legislature as part of the annual National Council of Provinces (NCOP) oversight week.
The two-day programme seeks to provide an opportunity for delegates to assess ongoing infrastructure development projects and offers a platform for engagement with local residents on challenges they are facing.
In her opening address, Mayor Nhaca lamented over complex challenges that the municipality is facing in delivering infrastructure projects.
“We welcome this timely visit and we view it as a decisive breakthrough that could inform future responses to some of the challenges that the municipality is experiencing.
Our municipality continues to heighten confidence in the province in its clear reflection of its commitments on strict financial controls and efficient delivery. Just like any other intermediary city, we have significant challenges. It is necessary to point out that some of our projects have been hijacked unabatedly by desperate actors within the construction industry. We have experience of instigated community protests and other forms of mafia tactics which range from vandalism, threats of violence and malicious damage to property. These challenges by implication are costing the municipality a great deal as they pose a huge threats to investment opportunities and compromise our ability to deliver decent infrastructure.
We therefore trust that this multi-party oversight visit will not only provide practical policy driven solutions but also ensure that our communities fully regain the trust and confidence in our government", concluded Nhaca.
As part of the KwaDukuza leg of the provincial programme, the delegation will today, 19 September 2024, be visiting the Shakaville Hostel Refurbishment Project, Rocky Park Housing Project, the Department of Public Works iLembe District Offices, Hullet Bridge and the Nonoti Beach Node Development.
The programme will break into public meetings tomorrow, 20 September 2024, across various communities within KwaDukuza.
