Media statement: KwaDukuza mayor welcomes robust assessments over service delivery challenges
KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca has welcomed recommendations of the multi-party committee of the KZN Legislature which has been deployed over two-days to oversee critical service delivery challenges.
Today, 19 September 2024, the delegation visited Nonoti in Ward 03, where it appreciated the public-private partnership between KwaDukuza and Inqaba Community Trust on the Nonoti Beach Node that is under phase one of development. The municipality entered into an agreement with the Inqaba Community Trust to build the very first post-1994 public beach facilities. With this agreement, the municipal council identified the node as a launchpad for expanding its tourism footprint along the coastal economic corridor.
The committee also visited the Hullet Bridge in Darnall, Ward 02 where it noted the strides being made and acknowledged challenges which have resulted to the delays.
The delegation made its final stop at the municipality’s flagship housing project, the Rocky Park Human Settlements Project in Ward 19 which was partly invaded by illegal occupants last year. Here, the committee tasked the mayor to establish a task-team to probe the illegal invasions as a matter of urgency while the matter will still form part of the agenda in the next sitting of the provincial legislature.
Mayor Nhaca remarked, “We appreciate the guidance that we have received from the committee on the steps we need to take towards strengthening corporation. As part of unlocking the Rocky Park Human Settlements Project project, the delegation also empowered me to urgently convene a tripartite task team that will look into issues relating to illegal occupation. This team will be made up of the SAPS, KZN Human Settlements and KwaDukuza. Such intervention will also ensure that all bonafide beneficiaries remain part of the project. With these recommendations, we hope for decisive reforms as the true intentions of the project were to improve the standard of living for low and middle-income earners in the region", said Nhaca.
The visit forms part of preparations for next months Taking Legislature to the People programme that will be rolled out by the Legislature.
