Media statement - KwaDukuza mayor supporting local investments and job security

KwaDukuza mayor Lindile Nhaca has extended her gratitude to the deputy minister for Employment and Labor, Jomo Sibiya on his commitment to use his department to support existing investments and enable the creation of new jobs.

Mayor Nhaca was addressing a multi-stakeholder engagement at the Hesto Harnesses Toyota plant which is the municipality’s biggest employer with over 8500 workers. Nhaca also emphasised the need for corporation amongst stakeholders to sustain current jobs while committing to provide municipal support to secure more investments.

“I'm happy minister that you are here to listen to us. It's true that when industries come along, it becomes our responsibility to support them. We appreciate your commitment and the support that you are showing especially to Hesto. This investment remains important to even President Cyril Ramaphosa who arrived here to officiate the new Ford plant back in 2022. As a municipality we will continue to support Hesto in unlocking future investments. We also take note of all the concerns that have been raised by the management of Hesto and organised labor, this clearly means that we need to work together to make the necessary interventions especially on the issue of restoring passenger rail services in KwaDukuza”, said Nhaca.

The minister convened the meeting to broker a solution involving the UIF Reduced Working Time for Hesto Harnesses employees. All stakeholders including Ilembe Enterprise and NUMSA committed to work together to find an amicable solution for the harness company and to rise above falsehood generated in the media.
