KwaDukuza Mayor awards R1 million for 70 tertiary students, breaking the barriers of apartheid era education into equal opportunities
KwaDukuza Mayor Siduduzo Gumede today, 06 February 2026, handed over R1 million worth of study bursaries to seventy (70) deserving tertiary students as part of an ongoing focus on undoing apartheid barriers through youth development and education support programmes.
Gumede attributed the occasion to forebears who fought for the nations democratic vision, pointing out significant historical moments that helped usher South Africa into democracy.
“Events of February 1990 changed the course of our nations future and they remind us that education was always at the heart of this nations vision.
The release of Mandela on 11 February 1990 dismantled the barriers of apartheid, transforming education from a tool of subjugation towards equal opportunities.
Last week, we marked the 36th anniversary of the unbanning of political movements after decades struggle, we reflect on those who kept the flame of resistance alive therefore, the achievements of the Class of 2025 and the successful bursary recipients honours the legacy of those who fought for the fruits of democracy”, Gumede was delivering a keynote address in celebration of matric top achievers at the Mayoral KwaDukuza Matric Excellence Awards ceremony where he also awarded R1 million worth of bursaries to deserving students.
The top achiever in the class of 2025 were awarded in order of their performance. Top achiever received a prize voucher of R15 000, second best achiever received R13,000, the third prize amounted to12 000 and the fourth recipient was awarded 10 000.
